If you do not know yet, Miquela is a robot and influencer with a million followers. She looks very human and certainly acts and talks like one, to the point that she comes across like any other mass following account holder/influencer on social media. First time I had seen her account, I knew we had entered the era of when lines between human intelligence and artificial intelligence have been blurred significantly more, hence leading to scenarios we as humans are not only not prepared for, but ones that will compromise our authenticity, with artificiality dominating our fabric of lives to a much higher factor than today.
Like any influencer, Miquela caters to algorithms and presents a certain social image- sits, stands, talks, behaves accordingly, releases content accordingly. Human influencers do the same; pretty much why every big photography, writing and branding account looks the same/similar. We are at a point that not only popular human influencers for the most part look like clones of each other but can also easily get us mixed up and can come across as CGI influencers, as Miquela, and vice versa. Miquela easily comes across as a human influencer any time of the day.
With this ‘samenesss’ not only there is a loss of individuality and authenticity, but also artificial intelligence has potential of faking it better to fit in better with algorithmic trends and hashtags, hence requiring human influencers to raise levels of their fakeness in order to sustain and grow their accounts. This would feed more and more non genuine and dishonest content on to our screens and into our lives with a possibility of molding young minds accordingly leading to a population that has lost the taste of human originality and reality- with their every action to serve towards a certain image that conforms to the algorithms, and every art piece to look like something popular. We already see this but with virtual influencers in the scene now, decline of genuine behavior and relationships can be expected further.
Not to mention there is already talk of how Miquela is threatening the fashion and other industries. How can flawed humans beat this flawless human. She has incredible capabilities to look, act, sound like however she wants to in order to raise her statistics, something that normal humans can attempt to but not nearly be as successful as Miquela. She is at another league of manipulating her image to fit to softwares better.
One could argue that algorithms could fall towards content propagating overall good and community welfare but again that will be used as a tool by these influencers to sell their account. One could again argue that may be it will be authentic display by them, but trends so far have shown that their goal to increase capital aka followers is heavier than any other cause.
In summary CGIs will be stronger candidates to bend, adjust, be flexible to serve algorithms. Human influencers will continue to compete with them and imitate. Result will be more inauthentic content coming our way. Hopefully we will not get influenced. If we do, corruption of human intellect and exploitation of masses can be expected. Further.
